This axis has 3 major moments:
- Workshops whose purpose is to foment the development of projects from Portuguese Institutions of Higher Education towards working with US partners in their internationalization strategies;
- Workshop to better prepare for participation at the NAFSA Fair;
- Site visit(s) to US universities/colleges by Portuguese participants who are less familiar with how the US system is organized.
These activities are based on applications for the limited number of places available and the need to obtain prior commitments from the parties involved.
Participants in these workshops will be are expected to develop a practical output that will better prepare their institution for potential partnerships and activities with US-based institutions.
The 2025 Fulbright Portugal / USA Study Abroad Workshop will be a one-day event for key staff and administrators at Portuguese higher education institutions to help them better promote study opportunities in Portugal and gain first-hand knowledge of how U.S. universities study abroad structures operate. The number of U.S. students in Portugal has been steadily increasing but there is room for bigger growth in the next few years, taking advantage of the increased visibility of Portugal as a top travel destination.
This workshop will give participants the tools to better attract students and to successfully engage with the U.S. representatives and it will follow up on our previous efforts and events that were very successful in terms of participation and feedback.
As a result of participating in the program, Portuguese International Relations Officers and Administrators will:
1) Expand their knowledge of U.S. higher education system;
2) Understand current challenges for U.S. students wanting to study abroad;
3) Identify and understand challenges of recruiting US students;
4) Share best practices in providing support for US students on site, including risk management expectations;
5) Learn about management of expectations from hosts institutions and students.
6) Learn about USA Study Abroad general topics.
The program will take place at the University of Coimbra, on Monday April 28th and will be based around the topics of:
- International partnerships;
- Trends and priorities engaging and attracting US students (Generation Z);
- Faculty engagement in Internationalization
- The many forms of internationalization at home;
- Strategies to implement + examples of best practices that Portuguese institutions can implement working with the US
